Accessibility statement

For the online complaints service at Example University.

Using this service

This service is run by Example University. It is designed to be used by as many people as possible. You should be able to:

  • navigate the whole service using a keyboard alone
  • use it without a mouse, and see clearly which control has focus
  • zoom to 200% without text being cut off or overlapping
  • use it on a phone without the page scrolling sideways
  • read it with a screen reader
  • use it with browser text and colour settings of your own

No part of the service requires a specific browser, an extension, or JavaScript to complete a task. Where JavaScript is available it makes a few things quicker; where it is not, every form still works.

How accessible this service is

This statement reports a self-assessment, not an audit. The service has been built and checked against WCAG 2.2 level AA by the team that made it. It has not been audited by an independent accessibility organisation, and it has not been tested with disabled users.

⚠ Commission an independent audit and user testing before relying on this statement, and replace this paragraph with what they found. Until then this service should be described as partially compliant — not because a specific failure is known, but because nobody qualified has looked.

What has been checked

  • Colour contrast, measured rather than estimated. Every text and background pair in the interface meets or exceeds 4.5:1.
  • Keyboard operation of every page, including the complaint form, the message thread, file upload and the staff queue.
  • A visible focus indicator on every interactive control.
  • Page layout at 375 pixels wide, with no sideways scrolling.
  • Form fields with real labels, and errors shown next to the field they belong to.
  • Status and outcome information conveyed by text and shape, never by colour alone.

What has not been checked

  • Testing with screen reader users, or with any disabled users.
  • Testing with speech recognition or switch access.
  • Documents you or the university upload. A PDF or Word file attached to a complaint, and the policy documents in the staff area, are not checked and may not be accessible.
  • Automated testing across a range of assistive technologies.

Known limitations

  • Uploaded documents. The service does not check or convert files. A scanned PDF attached to a complaint will not be readable by a screen reader. This is not something the service can fix; ask for the content in another format using the contact details below.
  • Session timeout. You are signed out after a period of inactivity, and there is no warning before it happens. If you are part-way through writing a long complaint, save your text elsewhere as you go.
  • The notification panel opens below the header and does not trap focus. It can be opened and closed from the keyboard, but it is a plain disclosure rather than a full menu widget.

Reporting a problem, or asking for another format

If you cannot use part of this service, or you need information in a different format — large print, plain text, audio, braille, or an accessible document — please say so. You will not be asked to explain why, and asking will not affect your complaint.

⚠ The institution should add a response-time commitment here, and confirm whether this address or a dedicated accessibility contact is the right one.

If you are not happy with the response

The Equality and Human Rights Commission is responsible for enforcing the accessibility regulations. If you are unhappy with how we respond to your complaint about accessibility, contact the Equality Advisory and Support Service.

⚠ Confirm the correct enforcement body and its current contact details before publishing. In Northern Ireland this is the Equality Commission for Northern Ireland, not the EHRC.

How this statement was prepared

This statement was prepared on 16 August 2026. The service was last reviewed on 16 August 2026.

The review was carried out by the development team, using measured colour contrast, keyboard testing of every interactive control, and layout checks in a browser at mobile and desktop widths. It was not carried out by an external organisation.

⚠ Update both dates, and this description, whenever the service changes or is re-tested. A statement that is out of date is itself a non-compliance.
